The incident occurred on December 15 near a check dam at Koodal Kadavu in Mananthavady, and visuals of the event were broadcast on television channels on Monday. The victim, identified as Mathan, a 49-year-old tribal man from the Chemmadu settlement, stated that the suspects appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

Mathan shared that he had no prior connection with the accused, who were reportedly involved in drug use, a problem prevalent in the Koodal Kadavu area. He also mentioned that the group had caused trouble in nearby areas.

The Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes, O R Kelu, visited Mathan, who is recovering in the hospital.

"This is an incident that should never have happened. It highlights the attitude towards the tribal community," the minister said.

Mathan suffered injuries to his hands, hips, and legs after his thumb got caught in the car door. Despite his cries for help, the car occupants dragged him for almost half a kilometre. The police suspect that the accused may have been tourists visiting the check dam.

Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed strict action in the case, according to officials.
