Tribal man dragged by car in Kerala's Wayanad

NEW DELHI: A tribal man was dragged for approximately half a kilometre along a road in the Mananthavady region of north Kerala on the evening of December 15.
The incident took place near the Koodal Kadavu check dam, and footage of the disturbing event was broadcast on television channels today. The perpetrators, a gang of unidentified individuals, have yet to be apprehended.
Police reports indicate that Mathan, a resident of the Chemmadu settlement, sustained injuries to his hands, hips and legs after being dragged by car occupants, who were believed to be tourists visiting the check dam.
A police officer stated, "According to our information, there were disputes between two tourist groups visiting the area on Sunday. Local residents, including Mathan, attempted to mediate, but the situation resulted in this brutal incident."
The 49-year-old victim's thumb became trapped in the car door, and despite his pleas, the vehicle's occupants continued dragging him for nearly half a kilometre, according to a witness.
The witness reported that the car contained at least four individuals who subsequently fled the scene. Mathan received medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Mananthavady police have registered a case under various BNS sections, including Section 110 for attempted culpable homicide.
"Our investigation continues, and we are working to identify the suspects. We believe they originate from Kuttipuram in Malappuram district," the officer added.
Police have intensified searches in border areas and are collecting CCTV footage to apprehend the suspects.
State SC, ST & BC Minister O R Kelu has strongly denounced the incident and instructed the district police chief to take firm action against the perpetrators.
The Minister emphasised that the government considers the attack on the tribal youth extremely serious and has implemented necessary measures to identify and prosecute those responsible.
He has also directed health officials to ensure the injured tribal man receives comprehensive medical treatment and care.
