KOCHI: At least five people died in blast at the Cochin Shipyard Limited at around 10:45pm on Tuesday.
The blast took place at the ONGC owned ship Sagar Bhusha, which was docked at the the Cochin Shipyard for maintenance.
Kochi city Police commissioner, MP Dinesh said that incident took place at the shipyards dry docks of the shipyards. The fire was brought under control around 11:00am.
Apart from the 5 that died in the incident, around 10 others have also been injured.
They were rushed to local hospital.
Workers say that as many as over 200 persons could've been working inside the ship if it was not for a holiday of Shivarathri.
The deceased has been confirmed as Unnikrishnan, a safety officer with the shipyard, and Jayan, Ramshad and Jivin, who were contract workers.
Following the request of Cochin Shipyard, Indian Navy also sent their fire tenders to the spot to help bring the fire under control.
Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, Nithin Gadkari tweeted that he has spoken to the Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard and asked has him to provide “all necessary medical support to victims and to initiate immediate inquiry with help of concerned agencies".
