Malayalam actor Shwetha Menon booked ahead of AMMA polls: Obscene content cited; IT Act invoked

In anticipation of the AMMA elections, the Kochi city police have filed a case against actress Swetha Menon, a presidential candidate, alleging she profited from obscene films and advertisements. The charges include violations of the IT Act and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.

KOCHI: In run-up to AMMA elections, Kochi city police registered a case against Malayalam actor Swetha Menon, who is contesting for the post of Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) president, for allegedly earning money through acting in obscene films and advertisements.Police invoked various sections, including Section 67(A) of the IT Act, 2000, which pertains to the publishing or transmission of sexually explicit content in electronic form, along with Sections 3 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.The FIR was registered by Ernakulam central police based on an order from the Ernakulam judicial magistrate court following a complaint filed by Martin Menachery, general secretary of Newspaper Association of India.The case gains significance as Menon is contesting against actor Devan for the post, with the election scheduled for Aug 15.
