Support swells for agitating wrestlers

Thrissur: Writers, activists, people’s representatives and sports stars took out a rally on Saturday to express solidarity with the women wrestlers, who are on a prolonged agitation in Delhi seeking action against BJP MP and wrestling federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing charges of sexually abusing women wrestlers.
Addressing the rally, writer and women’s activist Sarah Joseph launched a scathing attack on the central government for protecting Singh. “The government should realize that the Constitution guarantees equal rights to the rulers and the people, and Brij Bhushan should not be spared from the penal actions likely to be faced by other ordinary people facing such allegations, just because he is a powerful person among the ruling elite,” she said.
She said the country is passing through a pathetic situation where the sanyasis have become emboldened to openly demand that the Pocso Act should be abolished. The entire Indians should stand united with the wrestlers who have won laurels for the country and have now been pushed to a protracted agitation to protect their basic individuality, she said.
Footballer C V Pappachan flagged off the march. MLA P Balachandran inaugurated the public meeting. District panchayat president P K Davies, Martin Oorali, Sreeja Arangottukara were among those who spoke. Sportspersons from different colleges in the city also joined the rally. TNN
