KOCHI: Government issued an order through social justice department (SJD) on Tuesday to constitute a committee to work out the modalities for setting up a mental healthcare home for child abuse survivors in Thrissur. It is also plans to start new women and childcare (W&C)
homes
as a rehab centre for abuse survivors in
Kottayam
and
Alappuzha
next week. Rented premises have been identified for the same.
“To ensure that inmates of W&C homes under Nirbhaya cell – who suffer from serious psychological problems such as depression and schizophrenia – are given quality psychiatric care, state government plans to set up a mental healthcare home in Thrissur. Two NGOs have come forward to run the home,” said Nirbhaya cell state coordinator Sabeena Begum.
The governmen issued an order on Monday to constitute a technical committee led by George as the chairperson. Other members include district
mental health
programme’s state nodal officer Dr Kiran PS, Government Medical College Thiruvananthapuram’s community health (HoD) Dr Indu PS and
psychiatry
(HoD) Dr
Anil Kumar TV, orphanage control board member Fr Joshua and Sabeena Begum. There will be a separate mother and childcare home for abuse survivors who are pregnant or have children.
At present, there are 417 children in 14 W&C homes in state. There are no W&C homes in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta. Basic infrastructure will be ready in Alappuzha and Kottayam next week, SJD officials said.
