On Monday, IFI, a non-governmental organization to promote Indian movies, announced the results of their survey to judge the best Indian cinema of 2021.
For her performance in the movie ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’, Nimisha Sajayan shared the title of best actor (female) with Konkona Sen Sharma for her role in the movie ‘Geeli Pucchi’. Tapsee Pannu was adjudged second-best actor for her performance in ‘Haseen Dilruba’.
Fahad Fasil was adjudged as best actor (male) for his performance in ‘Malik’, and Tovino Thomas shared the spot of second-best actor (male) for ‘Minnal Murali’ along with Vicky Kaushal who played title role in the Hindi movie ‘Sardar Udham’.
‘Minnal Murali’ directed by Basil Joseph, ‘Joji’ directed by Dileesh Pothan, ‘Nayattu’ directed by Martin Prakkat, ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’ directed by Jeo Baby, ‘Kala’ directed by Rohit VS and ‘Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam’ directed by Senna Hegde were the Malayalam movies which managed to find a place in the list of top ten Indian movies. The movies were recommended by seven eminent film critics of India. The Disciple (Marathi) directed by Chaitanya Tamhane, is in the top spot.
According to IFI authorities, in the survey the IFI requested seven eminent film critics to recommend their choice of top 10 Indian films and top three performances by an actor male and female in order of preference. The choices listed by the critics were given marks by IFI. The critics who participated in the survey included Baradwaj Rangan (Chennai), Sachin Chate (Goa), Siraj Syed (Mumbai), Chandi Mukherjee (Kolkata), Murtaza Ali Khan (New Delhi), Christopher Dalton (Kerala) and

Noted film critic C Venkiteswaran said that as a small industry, Malayalam movies managed to tap the potential of OTT platforms in the post-Covid scenario. “In Malayalam, leading actors are ready to associate with the small movies, which are thematically diverse. Such movies got national attention”, he said.
