KOCHI: In a major seizure of ganja, Ernakulam Rural police seized nearly 250kg of the contraband while it was being smuggled in a tanker truck on Friday. Police arrested one person in connection with the incident.


The arrested person has been identified as

Selvakumar

, 42, of Puthupadi, Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The seizure was made under the leadership of district police chief (Ernakulam Rural) K Karthick. According to police, the accused was smuggling the ganja from Odisha to Idukki. Rural police intercepted the truck and seized the ganja based on a tip-off at Perumbavoor.

Police said the truck had five compartments and the ganja was carefully stashed in one of the compartments. Officers said Selvakumar, who was also the owner of the truck, claimed during police inspection that the truck was carrying natural oil.

Police however inspected the truck and recovered as many as 111 packages of ganja. Police said they have information that the accused has smuggled ganja in the past as well. Police are also investigating if the accused had any connections with those dealing ganja in the rural police limits.

Rural police have seized as much as 800kg of ganja in the past one-and-a-half years. Perumbavoor ASP Anuj Palliwal, SHO R Ranjith, Kuruppampady SHO V S Vipin, sub-inspectors T L Jayan, Rins M Thomas,
