RSS discusses women’s safety

Kochi: Women's safety at workplaces was discussed threadbare by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Samanvey Baithak, its three-day coordination meeting in Palakkad, with representatives from various organisations raising severe concern.RSS Akhil Bharatiya prachar pramukh Sunil Ambedkar said at a press conference on the concluding day of the deliberations on Monday that there had been a thorough discussion on the incident of rape and murder of the PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata and other similar incidents in the country. He said the meeting discussed the govt's role, official mechanisms, laws, penal actions, and procedures."There is a necessity to revisit laws and penal actions to expedite process of ensuring justice for women who suffer atrocities. We have proposed ‘five fronts' through which the issue of women's safety will be taken up. How it can be taken up legally, secondly by creating awareness, next through the education system — formal and informal — and by teaching self-defence," Ambedkar said. The fifth is the issue of content in all types of media. "People keep watching these kinds of content for long hours, which affect minds. So, all have decided to go back to their organisations and come up with programmes through any of the ‘five fronts,"' he said.Replying to queries, Ambedkar said caste and caste relations were very sensitive and should be dealt with very seriously. The caste-based census should be used only for the betterment of those communities or castes that are lagging and vulnerable, he said. "As RSS, we had already commented on this issue. In our Hindu society, we have a sensitive issue of our caste and caste relations... It is an important issue of our national unity and integrity, not just based on elections, election practices or politics," he said.The RSS conclave also discussed the ‘numerous conversion activities by missionaries' in Tamil Nadu, which was raised and discussed, and stated they would be taken seriously. Describing such activities as "very worrisome," Ambedkar said further details would be gathered from the ground. The Bangladesh situation also came up for discussion. "Of course, it's a very sensitive issue. Everybody is worried about Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh," Ambedkar said. Different organisations, through their delegates and statements, have requested the central govt to engage with the Bangladesh govt "to ensure the safety of Hindus and other minorities there," he said.Uttar Kerala district Sanghchalak K K Balaram, Akhil Bharatiya sah-prachar pramukh Pradeep Joshi and Narendra Kumar were also present at the press conference.
