Residents to intensify protests as NHAI seals off pedestrian pathway
Kochi: National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has allegedly sealed off a ‘centuries-old' pedestrian pathway linking Edappally, Marottichuvadu and Thrikkakara Temple Road on NH 66. The act has invited the residents' ire, prompting locals and elected representatives to warn of strong protests, including blocking the construction works."For generations, this walkway served as a vital artery for the local community. It was not just a shortcut; it was the primary route for pilgrims visiting Thrikkakara Temple, students reaching nearby schools and daily wage workers heading to Edappally bypass. By erecting a permanent barrier without providing a foot overbridge or an underpass, NHAI has effectively sliced a cohesive neighbourhood into two," Edappally councillor K A Vijaykumar told TOI.
Edappally-Thrikkakara Pedestrian Path Protection Council recently organised a massive convention to voice their grievances. The event was attended by Hibi Eden, MP, and Uma Thomas, MLA, along with leaders cutting across political parties. Residents argue that while the six-lane highway aims to reduce travel time between districts, it has significantly increased the ‘micro-travel' time for locals. What was once a two-minute walk across the road has now become a precarious multi-kilometre detour through congested junctions. "The infrastructure should serve the people and not displace them. Over 5,000 pedestrians use the path daily. Once the NH 66 works are completed, they will be forced to walk using the Oberon Mall flyover-cum-underpass which is around 1km long or the one near LuLu mall entrance side, which is nearly a 3km walk," Vijayakumar pointed out. Noting that their only demand is for a pedestrian underpass or similar facility, the council threatened to intensify the stir in the coming days. "This is a violation of a traditional right of way that has existed for hundreds of years," stated lawyer Alungal George. The council includes trustees from the local church, Juma Masjid, and temple committee. "The elderly and schoolchildren are the most vulnerable, they are forced to navigate heavy traffic on NH 66 or walk long distances," said Ramesh Mathew, a resident.
