THRISSUR: Actor-turned politician Suresh Gopi on Sunday openly stated his willingness to contest in the ensuing Parliament elections in 2024 from Thrissur.
Speaking at the meeting attended by Union home minister Amit Shah in Thrissur, Gopi said if not Thrissur, he was ready to contest from Kannur too.
Gopi asserted that he would stick with his older tag-line “Thrissur Njaningedukkuva” (I’m going to take Thrissur) even though it has been trolled extensively.
However, he added a caveat this time and said “Ningal Thannal” (if you give me).
“I’m appealing to the people of Thrissur to give me Thrissur. Whichever ‘Govindan’ comes I’m going to take Thrissur,” he added, in a veiled reference to CPM state secretary MV Govindan.
He recalled that he had to face a lot of flak for allowing people to touch his feet when he offered ‘Vishu kaineettam’ last year. “But I make it clear that I will come this year also and will not block anyone from touching my feet when I offer them Vishu kaineettam. But my earnest appeal is that none should touch my feet,” said Gopi.
Earlier, Union minister of state V Muraleedharan virtually announced that Gopi would be the party nominee from Thrissur parliament seat in the next elections.
Pointing out that Gopi had lost the last parliamentary elections only by a narrow margin, Muraleedharan told the media, “If people of Thrissur get an opportunity to correct the mistake they committed in the last elections, Suresh Gopi will be the MP from Thrissur in the next Parliament.”
