Rabies confirmed in dog that bit residents in Muvattupuzha

Kochi: The stray dog responsible for a series of attacks at Kadathy in Muvattupuzha was infected with rabies, autopsy report revealed on Monday.The municipality convened an emergency meeting in which it was decided to initiate an aggressive public health intervention. The animal was captured near Vazhappilly ITR Road on Sunday afternoon. However, the dog died in captivity while being transported to municipal facility. A subsequent autopsy performed at Mannuthy Veterinary Hospital on Monday morning confirmed presence of rabies virus.While early reports suggested that nine individuals had been injured, a detailed inquiry by municipal officials revealed that the dog had attacked 13 persons. Mnicipality chairperson Joice Mary Antony has urged public to remain calm. "There is no need for panic. We have administered first dose of vaccine to all 13 victims. They are being convened on Tuesday to receive second dose," she told TOI.A special session is scheduled for Tuesday at Muvattupuzha Govt Hospital to provide victims with essential guidelines and psychological support to prevent unnecessary distress.The municipality is also launching an extensive vaccination campaign targeting both pet and stray dogs. "The drive will commence in Kadathy area on Tuesday," the chairperson said.Meanwhile, reports have surfaced of a second dog exhibiting symptoms consistent with rabies. "Professional dog catchers have been deployed to locate and secure the animal. Furthermore, municipality has mandated continuous monitoring of local stray population to preempt further transmission," she added.
