Parents of Kerala girl who jumped off school building donate organs

KANNUR: Parents of a 17year-old girl who on Wednesday succumbed to injuries she suffered after jumping from her school building at Payyavoor in Kerala’s Kannur, have donated her organs.

Ayona Monson jumped from the building on Monday, just days before her laboratory model examinations. She suffered severe head injuries and was on ventilator support at a private hospital. She was declared brain dead.

After her parents, K M Monson and Anitha Monson, gave their consent, Ayona’s kidneys, liver and other vital organs were retrieved, allowing multiple patients to receive a second chance at life. On Thursday, one of her kidneys was flown to Thiruvananthapuram on a domestic flight. A green corridor was arranged till Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The organ reached the hospital by 11am, ensuring swift transplantation. Ayona’s second kidney was sent to Aster MIMS Hospital, Kozhikode.

Her liver was donated to a patient at Meitra Hospital, Kozhikode, while her two corneas were sent to Thalassery district hospital for two patients.
State health minister Veena George expressed gratitude to the family. Ayona is survived by her siblings Martin and Angel. The funeral will be held on Friday.
