KOCHI: A unique vegetable market in Kakkanad is today one of the most sought-after destination for Kochiites looking out to buy organic vegetables and fruits. The Sunday market sells a wide variety of pesticide-free vegetables and fruits that include lettuce, pumpkin, lady's finger, cucumber, yam, tapioca, papaya, chilli, banana, string beans, snake gourd, bitter gourd vegetables and tubers, among others.
The market gained prominence after Nattu Nanma, a group of 30 farmers, came together four years ago to sell organic farm produce. Over the years, it has become popular among customers who come from various parts of the city. Farmers from Chalakkudy, Cherthala, Palakkad and distant areas of Ernakulam sell their products here.
Induchoodan S, vice-president of Nattu Nanma, said the farmers ensure that they sell only organic products in the market. "We even visit the farm, where the vegetables and fruits are cultivated land and fix the rates keeping in mind the interests of both consumers and farmers. Since farmers sell their products directly to consumers by avoiding middlemen, they earn their profits," he said.
The consumers can also directly communicate with the farmers through a WhatsApp group and can book the products before they reach market.
The Sunday market at Kakkanad is not the only to hold the fascination of the customers. A few other such organic markets have come up in the city, which have also got takers. One such Sunday market is operational at Kacheripady for the past few months. "I bring pesticide-free vegetables from Cherthala and get a good amount from the market," says Satheesh, who sells both vegetables and tubers .
The consumers admit the price is on a bit higher side. "Though the price is high, I buy vegetables from this market. I believe these are organic products. When we eat banana, we know the difference between organic and the one grown using pesticides. Organic ones are tastier," says Abilash Sugunadas living in Kacheripady.
