No toll collection at Paliyekkara until Sept-end: HC

Kochi: The high court's order suspending toll collection at Paliyekkara plaza due to severe traffic congestion and ongoing maintenance on Mannuthy–Edappally stretch of NH-544 will remain in effect until Sept 30 as the court sought a further report from Thrissur district collector on the condition of the road. The bench of Justices A Muhamed Mustaque and Harisankar V Menon directed the collector to file a report on the completion of work undertaken by NHAI by Sept 30.The order came in a batch of petitions filed by Shaji J Kodankandath of Thrissur and others, challenging toll collection in light of severe traffic congestion. On Aug 6, the bench had initially suspended toll collection after noting heavy traffic snarls and poor road condition, particularly due to the construction of underpasses and other maintenance works along the stretch. Supreme Court later upheld this order.During Thursday's hearing, the collector submitted a report stating that heavy congestion persists due to ongoing work. The report emphasized that only timely completion of underpass works can ensure a sustainable solution. He highlighted the need for immediate and sustained safety measures, including installation of fall protection systems, proper drainage management, shoring of excavation cuttings, adequate lighting and high-quality safety installations. These interventions are critical to prevent further road edge collapses and ensure safe traffic movement.tnn
