KOCHI: The Motor Vehicles Department (
MVD
) is planning to introduce a
fare receipt system
in
autorickshaws
plying in the city. This would help to control rogue auto drivers who charge more from passengers.
Public can prodice the same as proof while registering grievances and complaints against auto drivers.
The decision in this regard was taken following an increase in the number of complaints against auto drivers.
"But in most cases, they have managed to go scot-free for want of evidence under the Motor Vehicles Act," said an official. "The receipt will be generated as per the reading shown in the fare meter. This will benefit passengers for any sort of claims to show that they had travelled in the auto," said Suresh M, MVD official, Ernakulam.
The new system is now being used in online taxi services such as Uber and Ola.
In India, autorickshaws in Bengaluru also use a similar system to check cheating by drivers.
