Kochi: As part of a face-saving move the state leadership of the Congress is likely to take strong stand against Perumbavoor MLA Eldhose Kunnappilly who is facing sexual assault charges.
Clarifying the party’s stand, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K Sudhakaran said on Wednesday that Kunnappilly would be expelled from the party if proven guilty. “At present, the probe is underway. The party has already sought an explanation from him. We are waiting for his reply,” he said.
It was on Tuesday that Kovalam police registered a case against the MLA based on the complaint file by a woman. The MLA’s whereabouts were unknown, and though the police have been trying to reach him for three days, there has been no response from him. It has been learnt he has already approached the sessions court seeking anticipatory bail.
Opposition leader V D Satheeshan has already clarified that the party will take a decision on taking any disciplinary action against Kunnappilly only after considering his response to the allegations.
“The party has a clear stand on issues related to violence against women. It has already been clarified at the Chinthan Shivir of the party. The complainant has given her versions in her statement given to the court. We have to consider his side of the story too, before reaching a conclusion. Though we tried to contact Eldhose after the issue came to light, he was not available,” said Satheeshan.
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary M V Govindan issued a statement on the matter on Wednesday. He demanded a detailed inquiry into the complaint against the MLA as the allegations were serious in nature.
“The accused in the case is an MLA and it is the Congress that has to take a stand based on its moral values,” he said.
