Kochi: Thrissur archbishop and Ernakulam Angamaly archdiocese metropolitan vicar Mar Andrews Thazhath has been elected the new president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI).
Syro Malabar Church, in a Facebook post on Thursday, congratulated Mar Thazhath for his appointment. It said that Mar Thazhath was elected CBCI president in the annual meet of the Indian bishop’s conference held at Bengaluru.
CBCI is the permanent association of Catholic Bishops of India.
It was formally constituted in September 1944 at the Conference of Metropolitans held in Madras.
Born in Pudukkad, Trichur, on December 13, 1951, Mar Thazhath was ordained a priest for the eparchy of Trichur on March 14, 1977. He was nominated the auxiliary bishop of the archeparchy of Trichur and titular bishop of Aptuca on March 19, 2004. He was ordained bishop on May 1, 2004, at Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral Trichur and enthroned as metropolitan archbishop of Trichur on March 18, 2007. TNN
