Man held for acid attack on couple in Kuttampuzha

Kochi: Ernakulam rural police arrested a 48-year-old man for allegedly hurling acid at a couple on Sunday.The accused was identified as Eldhose Poulose, 48, from Mamalakandam, Kuttampuzha. He was arrested by Kuttampuzha police on Monday night. According to police, the accused attacked the complainant, Eldhose Mathai and his wife. The complainant saw the accused assault another person, an acquaintance, and tried to stop him. He also recorded the assault on a mobile phone. In retaliation, the accused went to the victim's house with the acid in a bottle around 8.30pm on Sunday night. The accused then shouted so that the victims came out of their house. When they came out, he poured the acid into a cup and hurled it at them. Mathai sustained injuries all over his body, especially on the back of his head, face and left arm. His wife sustained burn injuries on her face, inside her nose, left hand and chest. He also allegedly pushed the woman, causing her to fall. The accused was produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. The investigation team included inspector A Shine Kumar, SIs K K Rajesh and P A Sibi, ASIs K P Saji, Shinoj, T P Jolly, Basil Joseph and CPOs A J Gismon and P K Jayan. He was booked under 329(3) (criminal trespass), 124(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid), 125(a) (act endangering life or safety of others), and 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with the intention to outrage her modesty) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
