Man arrested for attacking woman with iron broom in Munambam

Kochi: Munambam police arrested a 69-year-old man for allegedly attacking a woman with an iron yard broom. A video recorded by the woman, which shows the agitated man using the broom to attack her, has been widely shared on the social media.

Arrested person has been identified as Sunni Koottala of Kuzhippilly. He was arrested on a complaint filed by the 46-year-old woman.

According to FIR, the accused used mud to block flow of water on the road in front of his house. In retaliation for the woman questioning the same, the accused attacked her with the broom around 5.15pm on Sunday. The man allegedly used the broom to stab her in the neck. The woman sustained injuries on her neck.

The woman told the media that she intervened as the obstruction of normal flow of water led to water flowing into her property. The attack happened, reportedly in the presence of a local body member. The woman also told the media that police arrested the man only after news channels published the story on Monday. The woman claimed that she was having health issues following the attack and was awaiting her son’s arrival to seek medical help as she stays alone in the area.

However, police said prompt action was taken against the accused. His arrest was recorded at 2.30pm on Monday. He was booked under Sections 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means) and 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
