Shanavas, who was 38, had suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday and was being treated in the intensive care unit of K G Hospital. He suffered another heart attack while being transferred to a Kochi hospital on Wednesday.

A statement from Aster MedCity said that Shanavas was shifted from K G Hospital, Coimbatore in an acutely critical and grave condition. "His relatives were aware of the high risk involved in the transfer. Despite that, they wanted to transfer the patient to Aster Medcity. En route, the patient went into a cardiac arrest. Cardio pulmonary resuscitation was initiated at the reception of the emergency department of Aster Medcity," the statement said.

The resuscitative efforts lasting for more than an hour but unfortunately the patient could not be revived. His death was declared at 10.20pm, the hospital statement said.

A native of Naranippuzha in Malappuram, Shanavas received critical acclaim for his 2015 film 'Karie', which exposed latent casteism in Kerala society. Though the film did not win any award in the state it received acclaim at film festivals abroad.
