Malayalam actress Meena Ganesh passes away
Kochi: Malayalam actress Meena Ganesh, 82, passed away at a private hospital in Shoranur, Palakkad, on Thursday morning. She was under treatment for the last five days following a stroke.Meena acted in more than a hundred Malayalam films, and numerous plays and serials. Roles in movies such as Vasanthiyum Lakshmiyum Pinne Njaanum, Meesa Madhavan, Nandanam, Punaradhivasam, and Karumadikkuttan made her popular. She performed with various drama troupes such as SL Puram Sooryasoma, Kayamkulam Kerala Theatres, and Thrissur Chinmayi, and won many awards.Meena acted in a play for the first time at 19, while her movie debut was in P A Backer's Manimuzhakkam. However, she became active in movies after portraying Pathumma in the 1991 release Mukhamudra.Meena was born in 1942 at Kallekulangara, Palakkad, as the daughter of Tamil actor K P Keshavan. Meena first entered theatre through Koppam Brothers Arts Club during her school days and became active in theatre, performing in Coimbatore, Erode, Salem, and other places in Tamil Nadu.She married renowned playwright, director, and actor A N Ganesh in 1971. Meena and Ganesh later started a theatre group called Pournami Kalamandir at Shoranur. It was disbanded within three years due to financial difficulties. She later began associating with other troupes.Some of her famous plays include Panchajanyam, Mayookham, Simhasanam and Swarnamayooram. The character Kulsumbi played by Meena in the play Fasah directed by actor Thilakan for Chalakudy Sarathi Theaters was well-received. Panchajanyam written and directed by Ganesh for Ernakulam Drishyakalanjali was staged continuously for three years. Meena and Ganesh acted together in over 20 plays written by him.Meena is survived by her son and director Manoj Ganesh, and daughter Sangeetha.
