KOCHI: Upset with their families for opposing their love affair, a young couple committed suicide in Tripunithura on Sunday morning.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were neighbours and in love since the last few years. However, their families were opposed to their affair as they both belonged to different castes. While the boy was 21years old, the girl was a minor (16 years).
"Family members used to often ask them why they wanted to continue their affair. This seems to have upset them," the Hill Palace police said.
On Sunday at about 12 am, they left their home and went to a pond growing shrimps near Chinmaya School at Kannamkulangara, Tripunithura, and jumped into the pond after consuming sedatives after a few hours.
Around 2.48am, the boy, Nidish, son of Balan, Velangi Thoppil house, Kannamkulangara, sent a message from his mobile to his friend, informing him that they were at the shrimp pond. This made Nidish's friend suspicious. He later informed the duo's relatives and they started a search for the two. Later, the fire force and police also joined in.
The fire force retrieved the bodies of Nidish (21) and the minor girl from the pond around 5am. While the girl was a 11th grade student at Sanskrit school, Tripunithura, the boy was employed with a private firm. The body was then sent for post mortem.
"We found tablets near the spot and suspect that they had consumed sedatives. The post mortem confirmed death due to drowning.
However, the viscera has been preserved and will be sent for chemical analysis to confirm whether they have had sedatives," said Hill Palace police station in-charge P R Santosh.
