KOCHI
: Finally, there will be light at Ernakulam
boat jetty. Passengers and tourists, who have suffered for long, can heave a sigh of relief as the Central Public Works Department (CPWD
) is all set to install three high mast lights in the jetty, which was renovated four years ago. Even though the new boat jetty opened for public in 2009, authorities had failed to provide lights despite boats operating from here till 10.15pm.
The installation of lights was delayed due to issues between CPWD and the Kerala tourism department which manages the jetty. The CPWD, which was entrusted with the work, wanted the full amount to be released before they started work. Each high mast lights will cost about Rs 5 lakh. Authorities have also planned to install a transformer, streetlights and complete the electrification of the main building.
"As per the original plan, the decision was to install lights only after installing the transformer. But CPWD and the tourism department decided to install high mast lights immediately," said a CPWD official. He added that KSEB, which had insisted on the transformer, agreed to relax its stand. According to CPWD, the lights will be installed in two weeks' time and separate electric meters will be installed for each.
Meanwhile, passengers claimed that until the completion of all other electrification works, the new lights will not be enough to ensure their safety. "The area is under the control of anti-social elements as there are no lights in the area. The issue can only be solved if the building is fully lit up," said West Kochi Passengers Association secretary Padmanabha Mallaya.
