Lankan Navy detains man who jumped police custody
THRISSUR: Sri Lankan Navy has reportedly detained a Sri Lankan national, who had escaped from police custody while he was being taken to the district court on July 24, reports Ramavarman T.
Ajith Kishanth Perera, who was being interned at Viyyur central prison in connection with a drug peddling case, had escaped from police custody while he was being taken to court. Police had issued a crime card against him, and based on this, he was intercepted by the Sri Lankan Navy while trying to infiltrate into their country in a stolen boat, according to the information received by the police here .
P Lalkumar, SHO of West police station who is the investigating officer in the case, said Sri Lankan authorities had communicated about Perera's detention to Rameshwaram police, who in turn passed on the information to him.
City police commissioner Ilango R said police are trying first to confirm the information through the proper channel. "There could be multiple cases against him, as he is primarily a drug case accused. There are reports that he had stolen a boat and tried to escape through Kanyakumari to Sri Lanka. So the Indian Navy may have a case against him. Thrissur police have a case against him for jumping police custody," said Ilango.
