KOCHI: Kadavanthra police on Sunday arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly stealing Rs 2 lakh and a bike from a shop at Kadavanthra.

The arrested person has been identified as Marfa Ali of Assam. The case pertains to the incident which occurred on February 19, 2020.

The accused was an employee of the shop where the theft occurred. On the day of the crime, the accused broke open the shop in the early hours and looted Rs 2 lakh kept at the shop. He also stole the bike kept in front of the shop.

The accused had been absconding ever since. A special team was formed under the directive of Central ACP C Jayakumar to track him down. The subsequent investigation revealed that the accused was at Kozhikode.

Later, SI Anil Kumar and ASI Saneesh were sent to Kozhikode to track him down. The accused was arrested from Kozhikode and brought to Kochi.

Police said the accused admitted that he committed the crime with the help of a man named Anvar Hussain who also hails from Assam. Police have launched a probe to track him down as well.

The arrested person was produced before the court and was remanded in judicial custody.

Ernakulam Rural police on Sunday busted a gambling racket and arrested 16 persons.

The arrested persons have been identified as Abdul Rasheed, 36; Sulhach Ali, 30, Mushtaqin Ali, 32; Fakhrudeen, 27, Ramzan Ali, 40; Ainudheen, 32; Manakath Ali, 32; Maqbool, 34; Jahrul Islam, 22; Jiyabur, 26; Sakeer Hussain, 29; Jayir, 39; Mujeeb Rahman, 35; Mufidul Islam, 29; Shaukath Biswas, 32; and Kajarul Biswas, 24. The accused hails from Assam and West Bengal.

Perumbavoor police arrested them and seized Rs 2 lakh from them. The accused were arrested for gambling over games of cards at a plywood company at Vallom.

The owner of the company, Najeeb Mukkada has also been booked, police said. Police said that the accused were nabbed after receiving information that guest workers from various locations at Perumbavoor were often gathering at this company for gambling.

The accused were arrested based on an information received by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) Vivek Kumar.

Perumbavoor ASP Anuj Palliwal, Inspector R Ranjith, sub-inspectors Rins M Thomas, Jossy M Jhonson, ASI C A Abdul Sathar, SCPO Abdul Manaf, CP M B Subair, Jijumon Thomas and K A Sabu were part of the team which made the arrest.
