Arjunan, 84, had composed music for more than 1,000 songs in over 200 films. Born on March 1, 1936, he debuted as a music composer in theatre.

A chance meeting with Deverajan Master paved the way to his entry to films. His first film was Karutha Pournami and the songs he composed for it, including Manathin Muttathu and Hridayamuruki, were noted.

Arjunan is also credited for recording the first song of singer K J Yesudas when he was 16 and providing the first opportunity to A R Rahman to play keyboard in a film when he was a 12-year-old.
