IMD issues rain, temperature alert
Kochi: The IMD has issued a rainfall warning for Kerala from Wednesday to Saturday. It also issued a maximum temperature warning of 2-3˚C above normal for the state on Monday. There is also a warning for thunderstorms with lightning at one or two places until Thursday. A yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on Wednesday. An isolated heavy rainfall warning has also been issued for Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad on Thursday.Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the southwest Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same area during the next 36 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to move slowly nearly westwards towards the Tamil Nadu/Sri Lanka coasts during the subsequent two days. The cyclonic circulation over the central parts of the south Arabian Sea at 3.1km above mean sea level has become less marked.Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 gusting to 55kmph is likely to prevail over the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Comorin area, many parts of the Southwest Bay of Bengal, and adjoining areas of the Southeast Bay of Bengal.Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon has been weak over Kerala. Kunnamthanam recorded the highest rainfall of 4cm, while Vellathooval received 3cm. Minimum temperatures were above normal in Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Palakkad districts. Kottayam, Kannur airport, and Punalur recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 23.0°C. Skymet Weather said that the northeast monsoon activity is likely to pick up over South India. All the five sub-divisions affected by the monsoon rains will get a fresh spell of seasonal rainfall. The activity is likely to commence early next week and last until the end of the week. The wet spell will be predominantly seen from Nov 13 to 17. One or two days during this period may see heavy downpours at many places over the southernmost states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
