ALAPPUZHA: The dullness imposed by
Covid-19
lockdown prompted the
women
of Chennam Pallippuram
grama panchayat
near
Cherthala
in the district to start
flower farming
. Now the region has turned into a
village
of flowers.
Every ward of the panchayat is into flower farming and besides providing a source of income to its residents, the blossom of marigold, oleander, and jasmine has enhanced its beauty.
The women of the village are at the forefront as they cultivate flowers in 85 acres across 17 wards. The work is done by the beneficiaries of the MGNREGA programme under the
Subhiksha Kerala project
of the state government.
“In each ward, the panchayat has set up a 20 -member team of women for the cultivation,” said panchayat president TS Sudheesh. “At least 340 women have received employment through this initiative.”
“There is good demand for the flowers, mostly for temple rituals and functions like weddings,” Sudheesh said.
Panchayat authorities said that more residents have expressed interest.
“As our flower cultivation is a big success, more women want to do it. So, in the second phase, we will do vegetable cultivation on a large-scale along with flower farming. At present, a woman gets Rs 300 a day after spending just a few hours in the fields.”
