Malappuram: Kerala Sunni scholar and the general secretary of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, the supreme council of Islamic scholars in Kerala, Cherussery Zainuddeen Musliyar, 78, died at a private hospital in Kozhikode on Thursday morning.
Called as shining scholar (Zain-ul Ulama) by his large number of followers, Zainuddeen Musliyar was the successor of E K Aboobacker Musliyar, the former stalwart of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama and he was one of the prominent leaders of EK faction of Sunnis in state.
Zainuddeen Musliyar, born in Kondotty in Malappuram district in 1937, in a renowned Khaziyarakath family of Islamic scholars. After completing his formal education in schools and Madrassas in Kondootty, he joined dars (Islamic study centre) in Manjeri and Chaliyam for religious education under renowned scholars Ovungal Abdurahman Musliyar and Odakkal Zainuddeenkutty Musliyar. He worked as Mudarris (religious teacher) at Kondotty jumamasjid for 22 years.
He joined Darul Huda Islamic Academy in Chemmad in 1994 as principal. When the academy turned to Islamic University Musliyar appointed as pro-chancellor.
He became the member of Samastha Mushavara (supreme body of Samastha) in 1980 and later he became the chairman of Fathwa committee of Samastha. He became the general secretary of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama after the death of E K Aboobacker Musliyar. He also served several other key posts of different orgnisations of under Samastha including the vice-president of Islamic education board, chairman of examination board, state president of Sunni Mahallu federation, manager of Islahul Uloom Arabic college etc. He was also Khazi of many Mahallu across the state.
