KOCHI: At least one person was killed and 36 others were injured after multiple explosions rocked a convention centre during Jehovah's witnesses convention in Kerala's Kalamassery, on Sunday.

The blasts rocked Zamra International Convention Centre, just 10 km away from the city center, when over 2,000 people were attending prayer meet.

Kerala police chief Shaik Darvesh Saheb confirmed that an IED device was used for explosion.

"IED device might have been placed inside a tiffin box according to the preliminary investigation. More details will be received after further probe," said the DGP.

"We are conducting a thorough investigation, we will find out who is behind this and take strict action," added DGP.

The first blast occurred at around 9.40am, just half an hour after the prayer meet started.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the incident should be viewed seriously.

"It's a very unfortunate incident. We are collecting details regarding the incident. All top officials are there in Ernakulam. DGP is moving to the spot. We are taking it very seriously. I have spoken to DGP. We need to get more details after the investigation," said Vijayan.

Union home minister Amit Shah also spoke to Kerala chief minister to take stock of the situation.

The NIA team from Kochi unit has arrived at the spot. Another team from Delhi NIA is expected to reach soon.

Meanwhile, police have warned of strict action against those who spread fake news through social media in the wake of Kalamassery blast.

Kerala health minister Veena George also issued a direction to send burns team from Kottayam medical college to reach Kalamassery Medical College immediately.

"Shocked to hear about the blast at a religious gathering at #Kalamassery, Ernakulam district, Kerala, killing one person and injuring over 20. Heartfelt condolences to the kin of the deceased and prayers for speedy recovery of the injured," said governor Arif Mohammed Khan.
