Kerala: Former advocate general KP Dandapani passes away

KOCHI: Former advocate general and senior advocate KP Dandapani passed away here on Tuesday. He was 79.

During his legal practice that spanned over half a century, advocate Dandapani had also briefly served as an additional judge of the Kerala high court in 1996 but had returned to practising law soon.

From 2011 to 2016, he had served as the advocate general of the state during the term of the UDF ministry led by Oommen Chandy.

Notable litigations handled by him during his tenure as the advocate general included the Enrica Lexie case, defending the government against a single bench’s finding that the CM is responsible for the acts of his personal staff, a case alleging child trafficking from other states to orphanages in Kerala, cases over sanctioning of additional plus two batches, cases over the cancellation of bar licences of two and three-star hotels, the alleged bar bribery case, solar scam cases, and delimitation of panchayats.

He had also served as the president of the Kerala high court Advocates Association.

Enrolling as an advocate on May 17, 1968, advocate Dandapani began his practice under senior advocate S Easwara Iyer.

In 1972, he began independent practice along with his wife and advocate Sumathi.

His son Millu is an advocate at the Kerala high court and his daughter Mittu is a practising lawyer in Australia.
