KOTTAYAM: Initially started as a cookery competition to keep several women members associated with
Kudumbashree
engaged during the lockdown, it has metamorphosed into a platform to spawn entrepreneurial ventures.
The Kottayam district unit of Kudumbashree had launched a cooking competition on mango and jackfruit recipes for its members. This was done with an aim to keep them engaged during the lockdown period. However, as the competition is nearing its final stage, entertainment has given way to entrepreneurship. Around 100-odd recipes, most of them unique ones, have come up during the competition.
Now, the Kudumbashree unit is planning to compile these recipes and publish as a book. The cookery videos on selected recipes by the women will also be uploaded on the YouTube channel of the district Kudumbashree unit.
Kudumashree is also planning to provide training to select women and also give them financial aid to start entrepreneurships based on their unique food products. Many new and unique dishes like jackfruit biryani, chilly jackfruit, jackfruit burger, jackfruit kebab, barbeque mango fish, mango yogurt smoothie, etc, have been introduced through this competition.
According to Anoop Chandran, district programme manager of Kudumbashree, the competitions were initially held at the 11 block panchayats through 11 WhatsApp groups. The members would send their cookery videos into their respective groups with a brief write up. Our panel of judges will select the best three from each group, he said. The top three from each group will vie for honours at the state level. Each video is of 3-5minutes duration.
"Our main aim is to increase the number of entrepreneurs," he said. With the success of the programme, the district Kudumbashree is planning to start value addition units. "The selected women will be given training to become successful entrepreneurs," he added.
