Police on Friday arrested 36 school bus drivers from Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki for
drunken driving. The surprise check on buses, conducted following information from student police cadets, lasted for five hours from 6am.
Officers said some drivers were finding it difficult to even stand erect. The arrested included 19 in Ernakulam, 13 in Alappuzha, three in Kottayam and one in Idukki.
Ernakulam range IG P Vijayan, who initiated the drive, said parents and school authorities would be made aware of the situation.
"Anyone found drunk so early in the morning should be an alcoholic. They are risking the life of children," he said.
