Indian meteorological department issues yellow alert in five Kerala districts

KOCHI: The

Indian meteorological department

has issued a

yellow alert warning

of

isolated heavy rainfall

in five districts on Thursday (May 7). Accordingly, Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Malappuram have been issued rainfall alert of 7-11 cm rainfall in some places in these districts in the alert issued just a while ago.


This is accompanied by a

Nowcast warning

for the next three hours says that thunderstorm accompanied by moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts.

Following this, the

Kerala state disaster management authority

(KSDMA) has issued warnings of thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds, speed reaching 30-40 kmph very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala from May 7- 11, 2020.

IMD also said that a squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 Kmph, gusting to 60 kmph is likely over South Andaman Sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal and the sea condition will be rough to very rough over south Andaman sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised not to go to sea in this region.

General public have been asked to take care when skies get cloudy in these areas now. KSDMA has asked parents to ensure that special attention be given to children and avoid playing in open air and on the terrace between 2-10pm.
