P, who hails from Irula tribe of Palakkad, is the first from her community to qualify for the
Miss Kerala Fitness and Fashion
pageant finals, scheduled to be held in Thrissur, next month. The girl, who wishes to be a medical professional, teacher, model, actor and more, says she feels blessed to be able to chase all those dreams.
As Anu puts it, “This competition is an opportunity that I am trying to make the most of and do my best. I wish to serve as motivation for girls from tribes like mine, who often aren’t even aware that such platforms exist.” She chanced upon the opportunity to take part in the pageant through social media, and got picked after qualifying in the selection rounds.

Higher Secondary School, Palakkad is no stranger to the limelight or competitions, either. She says, “I have always loved music and dancing. I used to apply makeup on my own and try all things artistic from a young age. My parents have always been supportive, too.” Her dad, Palaniswamy, is also an artiste, who has appeared in movies like Ayyappanum Koshiyum and Pazhassiraja. Anu, too, has acted in director Priyanandanan’s Dabarikuruvi. “I loved the experience and felt that I can pursue acting, too, after completing my education,” she says.
The youngster, who also has a Youtube channel named Attappadikkari, through which she introduces interesting aspects of her community to the world, feels there are also bigger aims that can be accomplished through platforms like pageants. “Often, when I reveal my identity to outsiders in educational institutions and the like, they turn quizzical, with questions like ‘Oh, you are from Attappady? You belong to the Irula community? I want to change that attitude and bring our community forward in all ways that I can. I want to show how we can utilise the opportunities that we can get to showcase our talents, and come up in life," she explains.
