Death of bike rider: HC seeks NHAI response

Kochi: An HC bench of Justice Devan Ramachandran has sought instructions from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) regarding the death of Nikhil George, a young bike rider who fell into a pit dug as part of NH 66 widening work at Kodungallur in Thrissur on Saturday.
The court was considering pleas regarding the deteriorating condition of roads in the state.
During the hearing, the bench remarked sarcastically that the authorities seem to use a "state-of-the-art" technology to create pits on the roads, implying negligence. The bench noted that no one, including the district collectors, appeared concerned about such accidents. It had previously been stated that road accidents of this nature are man-made disasters, and the district administration could act accordingly. The bench also commented that hundreds of citizens in Kochi alone have experienced minor accidents on city roads.
The bench has posted the petitions for the following week.
