Health dept issues advisory to prevent spread of communicable diseases
Kochi: In the wake of increasing communicable diseases during monsoon, health department issued an advisory to the public. The department warned of the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea, jaundice and typhoid and asked the public to be extremely vigilant.
According to officials, there is a greater chance of drinking water sources becoming contaminated during the rainy season. “Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize the use of clean drinking water and maintain hygiene practices. To prevent waterborne diseases, it is essential to use only boiled water for drinking. Wells and other water sources should be chlorinated as per the instructions of health workers. Do not mix un-boiled water with boiled water under any circumstances. Water from public distribution systems, RO water, water from filters, canned water, and chlorinated water should be boiled for 20 minutes before drinking. Use boiled water to prepare ice, cold drinks, pickles, and chutneys. Wash hands thoroughly with soap after using the toilet and before handling food. Use clean water to wash dishes and rinse the mouth. Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly before use. Take special care to prevent the spread of disease from infected individuals to others,” the advisory stated.
Those infected should not handle food, and utensils used by patients should not be shared with others. Wash hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.
Health department asked the public to seek medical attention if symptoms of any such diseases appear and inform local health workers.
In case of diarrhoea, rehydration therapy is important to prevent dehydration due to the loss of water and salts from the body. Salted rice water, coconut water, lemon water with salt and sugar, and ORS solution are effective, the advisory states.
