KOCHI
: The Kerala high court on Thursday gave permission to conduct DNA test on BittiMohanty
, who, according to police, is allegedly an escaped rape convict. Bitti, son of former Odisha DGP B B Mohanty, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raping a German tourist at Alwar in Rajasthan in 2006. However, he had been absconding after being released on parole for 15 days in November 2006.
The person in police custody now had claimed that he is Raghav Rajan of
Andhra Pradesh and not Bitti as alleged by police.
Dismissing a petition filed by Raghav Rajan questioning a lower court's order allowing police to conduct DNA test, Justice K Harilal held that the prosecution is in imminent need of conducting the DNA test, which is a scientific and authentic test approved by the apex court and the Parliament.
The question regarding the identity of the person in custody can be proved by confirming whether he is the son of B B Mohanty and the prosecution can do so by establishing paternity, the court held.
