First refit activities of INS Vikrant begin

Kochi: The Indian Navy’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which will complete one year of its commissioning on September 2, has been docked at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for its first guarantee refit. Sources said that the refit was pre-scheduled to be carried out once the carrier completed its flight trials and fleet integration activities.
After the two-month refit the ship is expected to be deployed for full-scale operations.
Vikrant reached Kochi in June after the Navy showcased its maritime teeth and flawless execution of two-carrier battle group operations off Goa coast in the first week of June.
The refit activities are being undertaken under the supervision of the Navy. Sources said that the vessel will be taken out of water and dry-docked as part of the refit activities. It will be Vikrant’s first dry-docking after its launch in 2013.
“Vikrant had completed various types of extensive trials in the last one year. Any issues observed during this period will be rectified during the refit. Dry-docking is necessary to check underwater systems and parts of the vessel,” said a source.
