'File complaints on septic waste dumping'

: Residents have been asked to approach the district administration or police to file complaints if anybody is seen dumping septic waste in public places or water bodies. District collector S Suhas asked the public to send him photos or registration number of vehicles, which dump the waste collected from houses or institutions.


At the district planning committee meeting on Saturday, the collector also urged people to post complaints on his Facebook page to inform him about such reckless dumping of septic waste.

Meanwhile, those who attended the meeting demanded that there should be a system to monitor the agencies, which collect septic waste.

in a mess: The problem of waste disposal in various parts of Maradu and Kalamassery continues to remain unresolved though facilities have been installed to address the issue.

when the local body tried to implement the project. Locals raised objection to the municipality's plans to install plants in selected areas.

As a result, the local body has decided to begin implementation of the project only after creating awareness to people in areas where the plants will be installed.

"We laid a foundation stone in North Colony division. People fear that setting up of the project will lead to a situation similar to that at Brahmapuram. We will conduct awareness classes for them to clear misunderstandings on the project, which is running successfully in many regions," said health standing committee chairperson Sujatha Sisupalan.

When the local body tried to install the plants in Thattekkadu division too locals objected it. We have an issue of space-shortage. The local body has asked councillors to identify open places in their respective areas, she said.

In a related development, the local body has noted that buckets distributed to residents to keep segregated waste are being used to keep cloths. "We are planning to conduct a survey to find out how many actually use the buckets," she said.

The disposal of plastic waste too continues to trouble the people in the locality though a plastic shredding unit was set up months ago. The unit remains unutilized as there is no facility to keep the shredded plastic.

"The existing shed is a small one and cannot house large quantities of shredded waste before transporting it to the agency, which buys it. The local body has estimated the cost for setting up a new shed," said a municipality official.
