Kochi: From meditative images embossed on brass-plated sheets to a striking sand art portraying Buddha holding a lotus flower, an ongoing exhibition at G Memorial in Kochi is drawing visitors into a visual exploration of shades of Buddha through contemporary art. The exhibition, titled Awakening organised by Indus Art Centre, Ernakulam, as part of Buddha Purnima celebrations, features paintings and sculptures by 20 prominent artists from across the country.Leader of opposition V D Satheesan, who inaugurated the exhibition on Thursday, said Buddha's teachings against war and conflict have acquired greater significance in the present world. "When apathy among people is spreading dangerously across the world, Buddha's message against war, conflict and his stand for peace gain greater significance today," he said.Among the exhibits is a work by Guruvayur-based artist Suras Perakam, who used acrylic paint and sand to create an image of Buddha with a lotus flower. Contemporary artist V Kunjumon from Thiruvananthapuram has displayed Buddha-inspired creations on cement pots and brass-plated sheets featuring meditative imagery.Kunjumon said he was long influenced by Buddha's philosophy and was excited to showcase his works at the exhibition. Curated by artist Rehna, the exhibition will continue till May 4.
