Elders dominate voter demographics in Ernakulam

Kochi: The final roll of voters' list released by election officials shows that elderly population, those who are 60 and above, constitute 27% of voters in Ernakulam. Of the total 26,38,106 voters in the district, 7,11,290 are elders. The data also shows that those in the age group of 50 to 59 represent the highest number of voters in a single category in Ernakulam, with 5,41,812. This is followed by those in the 40 to 49 age group, with 5,32,641. The district has only 21,317 voters in the age group of 18 to 19. Kochi assembly constituency has the lowest number of young voters, with 1,036. The highest number of voters in this age group is in Kunnathunad constituency, with 2,030.Central University of Kerala former vice-chancellor G Gopakumar says govt fails to ensure skill education and provide jobs to youngsters, making the latter feel indifferent to the democratic system. "Besides apathy towards the political system, youngsters are moving out in large numbers in search of jobs and education. By making the education sector over-politicized, we are losing out to other states in ensuring skill education," he says.As per the data, there are 12,83,008 male voters and 13,55,070 female voters in Ernakulam. Besides, there are 28 transgender voters.
