NEW DELHI: An elderly woman and her 53-year-old son were hacked to death in broad daylight in this north Kerala district on Monday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Meenakshi, who was also called Lakshmi, 72, and her son Sudhakaran.
The fatal incident occurred at Pothundi within the jurisdiction of Nenmara police station at 10 am. The pair were fatally attacked outside their home.
According to police officials, their neighbour Chenthamara, 57, is the primary suspect. He was previously imprisoned for allegedly murdering Sudhakaran's wife and had recently been released on bail.
The authorities stated that Lakshmi was attacked when she attempted to shield Sudhakaran from Chenthamara's assault. Sudhakaran succumbed to his injuries at the scene, whilst his mother died during transportation to the hospital.
Police reports indicate that Chenthamara held a grudge against Sudhakaran's family, believing they were responsible for his wife and children abandoning him.
The authorities have initiated a search operation to apprehend Chenthamara, who escaped immediately after the violent incident.
