NEW DELHI: An elderly couple died after a fire broke out at their house in Kerala's Alappuzha district in the wee hours of Saturday.
The couple's son was taken into custody in connection with the incident, police said.
The victims were identified as Raghavan, 96, and Bharathi, 86, residents of Chennithala village, as confirmed by authorities.
Police sources indicated that their son, Vijayan, was apprehended by Mannar police on suspicion of arson. Sources revealed that Vijayan had property-related disagreements with his parents.
Authorities located and detained him in an adjacent plot.
"An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident, and further details will be disclosed later," a senior police officer said.
The fire was initially noticed by an autorickshaw driver at 3.30 am, who prompted villagers to contact the Police and Fire and Rescue Services.
The emergency responders successfully extinguished the flames and discovered the burnt remains.
The house was completely gutted in the fire, the police said.
