Kochi corporation suspends rehab home official

KOCHI: The

Kochi corporation

on Tuesday placed under suspension Anwar Hussain, the

superintendent

of

Palluruthy

Relief Settlement (PRS), a rehabilitation home under its aegis, after police arrested him for assaulting an elderly woman and her daughter at the settlement on Monday. The suspension order was issued by corporation additional secretary R Rahesh Kumar.


The order also stated that a preliminary inquiry was conducted by the PRS. “The preliminary inquiry found that Anwar Hussain had committed the crime. We hereby suspend Anwar Hussain from the services with immediate effect based on Section 10 (b) of Kerala Civil Services (Classification Control and Appeal) Rules, 1960, for further probe,” said the order.

Meanwhile, the Kerala women’s commission also registered a case against the accused. Commission member Shiji Sivaji visited PRS on Tuesday and recorded statements of the inmates and other staff. She said that the accused will be summoned before the commission to submit his explanation, based on which stringent actions will be taken.

Palluruthy police arrested Hussain based on a directive by district collector S Suhas to register a case against the employee after the video footage of the assault became viral on the social media. Health and social justice minister K K Shailaja also issued an order to the social justice department director to investigate the case and take strict action. Hussain is charged under Sections 323, 324, 506, 354 and 501 of IPC.
