KOCHI: Sathyadeepam, the weekly run by Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, said in its latest editorial that the Church leadership should seriously consider the killings in regions like Manipur, where there is a strong Christian presence, as a warning. The editorial titled ‘Manipur Manappoorvamanu’ (Manipur incidents are deliberate) also alleged that there was a growing suspicion that the riots were planned as responsible entities are continuing their silence two months after the violence broke out.
The editorial alleged that the official leadership of the Church ignored Manipur riots in the beginning. It said that even now, apart from calls for peace and relief measures, there was no effort to visit the affected areas or forming a delegation to bring this matter to the President’s attention. There were no efforts to call a news conference in Delhi to appeal to the conscience of the country, said the editorial.
It alleged that the riots, which have not abated weeks after the visit of Union home minister Amit Shah on May 29, has made it clear that things are spiraling out of control. The editorial also criticized PM Narendra Modi for not speaking on the Manipur crisis. It said that the question – why PM was not commenting on Manipur riots – was not only asked by critics but by all those who believe in democracy. It also alleged that Modi, who made over 30 visits to northeastern states in the past nine years, is not visiting deliberately.
