KOCHI: In an attempt to restart operations before Saturday,
Cochin International Airport has started demolishing a part of the peripheral wall around the
operational area
to allow the excess water flooding the airport to flow out.
"There are two canals, northern canal, and the central canal, running inside the operational area that is now overflowing. We take a part of the peripheral wall near the central canal in an attempt to increase the flow of water from the airport," said
airport officials
, who added that there is no security risk this operation.
Earlier today, due to the heavy rainfall and flooding, Cial had suspended airport operations till 2 am on Saturday.
Airport officials said that airport is working hard to ensure that it can resume operations as soon as possible.
"Losing these days is a big loss for us and our passenger. Around 30,000 people fly from here every day," said Cial official.
