Breakthrough for NH 66 pedestrian crisis: New crossing plan at Edappally
Kochi: The long-standing travel woes of pedestrians at Edappally and nearby areas are finally nearing a resolution.Following intense public protests, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) agreed to implement a dedicated pedestrian crossing system, linking Edappally and Marottichodu Market areas, to bridge the divide created by the expansion of NH 66.
During a high-level meeting chaired by Hibi Eden, MP, at Ernakulam Govt Guest House, NH project director P Pradeep outlined a proposal to ensure safe pedestrian movement. The proposed plan involves constructing compact structures on either side of the highway equipped with high-capacity lifts. These lifts will transport pedestrians to an overhead walkway, allowing them to cross the high-traffic corridor without risk. To ensure the project is world-class and sustainable, authorities suggested that sponsorships and advertising revenue could be leveraged to enhance the facility's maintenance and aesthetics. While an underpass was discussed as a future possibility once the elevated highway is completed, officials cautioned against underground crossings, noting they often fall into disrepair or become stagnant like culverts. The crisis began when the construction of an underpass-cum-flyover near Oberon Mall led to the removal of existing zebra crossings and signals. This effectively marooned the locals of Marottichodu and Edappally. The situation worsened when NHAI decided to demolish the old foot over bridge and constructed four-foot-high concrete slabs and drainage systems, physically severing the historical and social links between Edappally, Marottichodu and Thrikkakara Temple road areas. "The locals were forced to navigate hundreds of speeding vehicles or take lengthy detours to Edappally Junction just to reach the other side of the road. This lack of foresight by authorities had previously triggered massive protests," said Uma Thomas, MLA, who attended the meeting. The resolution process is now on the fast track. NHAI is currently drafting a detailed technical sketch of the proposed crossing. A joint site inspection is scheduled at 12pm on Friday, where officials, people's representatives and locals will review the plans, Eden said. The meeting saw a broad range of stakeholders, including Kochi corporation and Thrikkakara municipal councillors, technical experts and protest committee leaders.
