, died on Friday after a wooden plank used as a

cricket bat

slipped off his schoolmate’s hand and hit his neck. The deceased has been identified as Navaneeth, son of Santhosh (Vinod), Vinod Bhavan, Puthuppally Kunnam, Nooranad, Alappuzha.


Kurathikadu additional sub-inspector Jaffar Khan said that the incident took place around 1.30pm when Navaneeth, a Class VI student, was returning to his classroom after washing his hands after having lunch. At that time, three students were playing

cricket

in a space between two school buildings. When Navaneeth reached the spot, the bat slipped from the hands of one of the students and hit the back of his neck. Suddenly he fell unconscious,” he said.

Soon the teachers rushed him to Chunakkara Community Health Centre and the doctor there refereed him to Kayamkulam taluk hospital. However, his life could not be saved. His body has been shifted to the morgue of the hospital and will be handed over to the kin after completing postmortem at Alappuzha Medical College Hospital on Saturday.

“We could not find any external injuries on his body during the inquest. But blood was oozing out of his mouth and nose. The reason behind the death can be ascertained only after receiving the postmortem report. The statement of the teachers and students will be collected on Saturday,” the ASI said.

Police have registered a case as per the IPC 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

Navaneeth leaves behind his father, mother Dhanya and an younger brother Naveen. “The doctors told us that there were no external injuries and the exact reason could be found only after autopsy. We are waiting for the report,” said S Pradeep, a relative of the student.
